Surface, structure, room

Drywall always starts with something that already exists: a wall, a ceiling, an open floor plan. Five operations turn that into a room that suits the way it will be used.

  1. 01Divide

    Split a floor area

    A stud wall draws a new boundary through a room without touching the structure of the building. One large room becomes two usable ones, a corridor becomes a store.

  2. 02Shape

    Set edges and recesses

    Bulkheads, niches, service shafts and lintels come out of the same framing. What should be straight becomes straight. What should disappear goes behind a surface.

  3. 03Line

    Build over what is there

    A lining sits in front of an existing wall. It creates room for services, evens out a surface that is out of true, and gives a flat face without disturbing the original.

  4. 04Insulate

    Fill the cavity

    The space between the studs takes mineral wool. That is what dampens sound between rooms, and the reason a lightweight wall can do more acoustically than its weight suggests.

  5. 05Finish

    Produce the surface

    Joints are taped, filled and sanded until the surface matches the agreed level. After that the wall can be papered or painted straight away.

Which of these steps a project needs only becomes clear on site. Some rooms need one wall, others the complete build up.

Open floor

What is there

It starts with one continuous area inside the existing walls. Generous, but with only one function. The dimension shown is the clear span between the existing internal faces.

The plan shows only the existing external walls and one undivided floor area.

The drawing illustrates the principle. It is not a plan for any particular building.

New rooms start with clear boundaries

A drywall partition goes up in days, stays light, and can be taken out again later. That is what makes it the most flexible tool in interior fit out.

01Non load bearing

Partitions

A metal stud frame boarded on both sides divides a room without altering anything load bearing. Whether one room becomes two, or an office gains its own meeting area, is purely a question of layout.

02In front of the original

Wall linings

A second skin in front of the existing wall creates a cavity. Services and insulation disappear into it, and a flat face appears in front, even where the original is out of true.

03With a lintel

Doors and openings

Openings are formed with reinforced studs and a lintel so the frame stays put and nothing works loose when the door is slammed. We fit the internal doors themselves on request.

04Levels Q1 to Q4

Surfaces

Joints and screw heads are filled and sanded. Which surface level makes sense depends on the light and on the final coating: a smooth wall under raking light asks for more than a textured wallpaper.

What a drywall partition is notIt carries no load from the building. If an existing wall has to come out, or an opening has to be cut into load bearing masonry, that belongs with a structural engineer and not in a drywall quotation. We tell you as soon as a project moves in that direction.

The ceiling decides how a room feels

Services above the suspended ceiling, a quiet surface below. Together they change the proportion of a room more than any wall colour can.

Suspending

A frame of direct or adjustable hangers is fixed to the structural soffit and carries the boarding. How deep it hangs follows from what has to fit above it.

Service void

Ventilation ducts, cable trays and pipework disappear into the ceiling void. Access panels stay where someone will need to reach them later.

Lighting

Downlights, coves and indirect edges are planned in advance, because their position determines the framing. Drilling holes afterwards is possible, but rarely pretty.

Proportion

A room that is too tall feels echoey and uninviting, while a dropped ceiling plane over part of it gives the space an order. Both are decisions taken before the framing goes up.

How much height a suspended ceiling costs depends on the framing and on the services above it. We measure the existing room height and tell you what is left.

Quiet is a question of construction

A lightweight drywall partition can hold back more sound than a heavy solid wall, provided its two skins are decoupled from each other. That is not a material trick, it is pure construction.

Mass, spring, mass

The two boarded skins are the masses and the insulated cavity between them is the spring. Sound has to set the first mass vibrating, carry that vibration across the spring and excite the second mass again. Energy is lost at every transition. The less rigidly the two skins are connected, the less arrives on the other side.

Decouple

Separate stud rows or resilient channels stop the vibration travelling straight across as structure borne sound. A single rigid connection is enough to undo the whole effort.

Insulate the cavity

Mineral wool between the studs slows the movement of air inside the cavity. An empty cavity behaves like a resonating box and can make the wall worse at certain frequencies.

Add mass

A second layer of board, offset against the first, adds weight to the skin and closes the joints of the layer beneath. It is the simplest adjustment when there is no room for a thicker wall.

Seal the junctions

Wherever a wall meets the floor, the ceiling or a socket, a flanking path appears. Sealing tape, staggered back boxes and properly filled perimeter joints are the part of the work nobody sees afterwards and everybody hears.

How much a wall achieves in the end depends on the system chosen, on the substrate and on the junctions. That is why we quote no figures without a specific build up, and instead discuss what makes sense in your situation.

The build up, layer by layer

What looks like a single wall from outside is several layers with different jobs. The section shows them from the visible surface back to the existing structure.

Filling and paint

The thinnest layer and the most visible one. It decides whether a wall stays calm under raking light.

Boarding

One or two layers of board, screwed with staggered joints. They form the face and will later carry pictures, shelves and skirtings.

Stud frame

Metal profiles at a fixed centre spacing, held at floor and ceiling. They give the wall its geometry and take the reinforcement for any loads.

Cavity fill

Mineral wool between the studs, friction fitted and without gaps. It is what does the acoustic work, not the board thickness alone.

Existing substrate

With a wall lining the old wall stays and is built over. With a free standing partition this layer does not exist.

This drawing explains the principle of a common build up. It is not a working detail: which layers a wall actually needs follows from the system chosen and the job on site.

Where drywall helps

Almost every interior alteration touches drywall somewhere. These are the situations that come up most often across the Heinsberg district.

01

Splitting a room

One large child bedroom becomes two, or an open living area gains a separate work space. The new wall follows the window and the radiator, not the other way around.

Offices and commercial space

Meeting rooms, reception areas and quiet single offices can be built into existing floor space without permanently altering the leased property.

Loft space

Slopes, knee walls and collar beams become straight surfaces with framing and boarding. Drywall is the step that turns a roof space into a room.

More quiet

A lining on the party wall, or a suspended ceiling under a timber joist floor that carries every footstep, are the usual answers to a noise problem in an existing building.

Hiding services

New cabling, ventilation or heat pump pipework has to run somewhere. A boxed shaft or a lining is usually cleaner and quicker than chasing into the wall.

Straightening old rooms

Instead of patching a broken plaster surface, it is built over. The result is a flat wall, with no drying times and without opening up the original.

What we do not doStructural engineering, electrics, plumbing, heating, shell construction, windows and planning permission belong to other trades. We coordinate the sequence with them so the site runs in the right order, but we never quote for work we do not carry out ourselves.

From enquiry to handover

Six stages, always in this order. Dates and durations are agreed together once the scope is clear.

    Enquiry

    You describe the project, ideally with a few photographs. The clearer the starting point, the more reliable the first assessment.

  2. 02

    Survey on site

    We look at the room, take measurements and record what is there: substrate, heights, services, junctions.

  3. 03

    Planning and quotation

    Wall position, build up, surface level and scope are all put in writing. You know what will be built before it is built.

  4. 04

    Framing

    Profiles are aligned, junctions sealed, reinforcement built in for later loads, then the insulation goes into the cavity.

  5. 05

    Boarding and filling

    Boards fixed with staggered joints, joints taped, filled and sanded. This stage decides the visible result.

  6. 06

    Handover

    A joint inspection and a swept site. If you want, we carry straight on with painting, doors and flooring.

Common questions about drywall

What customers most often want to know before drywall work begins.

No. A stud wall carries no load from the building; it stands on the existing floor and meets the ceiling above. That is why its position in the plan is largely free. It is different if an existing wall has to come out or an opening has to be cut into load bearing masonry: that is a question for a structural engineer, and we will say so as soon as your project points that way.

Yes, if the wall is prepared for them. For heavy loads such as kitchen wall units, basins or large screens we build cross rails or a full sheet of reinforcement into the framing. Light loads are carried perfectly well by suitable cavity fixings. The only thing that matters is telling us before the boarding goes on what will later hang on the wall, because after that the reinforcement is no longer accessible.

Little during the build itself, because no mortar, plaster or screed is used and nothing has to dry out. Dust mainly comes from cutting and from sanding the filled surfaces. We seal off the working area, protect the adjoining rooms and hand the site over swept.

They describe how far a surface is filled. Q1 closes the joints only and is enough where something else will be fixed over the top. Q2 is the usual standard for wallpaper and textured coatings. Q3 adds a wider skim, and Q4 skims the entire surface, which is the choice for a smooth painted finish or where light rakes across the wall. Which level makes sense comes down to the lighting in the room.

Yes, and that is one of the reasons it suits uses that change over time. After removal, fixing points remain at the floor, the ceiling and the adjoining walls that have to be filled or made good. The work involved is far less than with a masonry wall.

Yes. Decorating, internal door fitting and floor coverings are part of our own scope, so work can continue straight after the filling without you coordinating a second company. We do not carry out electrics, plumbing or heating, but we agree the sequence with the firms involved.

That depends on the area, on the number of openings and on whether a ceiling is involved. It can only be said reliably after the survey, which is why we deliberately quote no blanket figure here. What most often extends the programme is not the walls but services that still have to be run first.
